Los Angeles based Scottish musician, Charlie Clark is keeping busy. With current projects ranging from MJ12’s scuzzy indie pop, Broken Arrow’s darkly anthemic rock, Astrid’s 60’s driven garage pop and a day job that has quietly propelled Clark into the ranks of the hottest music bookers in town, Charlie Clark is quickly becoming a key player in the thriving Los Angeles independent music scene.
Finding early success with Astrid, a band he founded with childhood friend Willie Campbell, Clark and Co. released three full-length records, including 1999’s sophomore lp, Strange Weather Lately. Produced by the godfather of twee, Edwyn Collins, the album went on to establish Clark as a songwriter with strong pop sensibilities and a penchant for harmonizing.
Astrid became part of the core lineup of Scottish supergroup, The Reindeer Section, featuring members of Snow Patrol, Belle & Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub and The Vaselines, The Section released two full-length critically acclaimed albums. Clark then went on to appear as a guest vocalist and musician on records by such artists as The Zephyrs, Arab Strap, Mogwai and Snow Patrol before eventually leaving his homeland for sunnier climes.
Charlie Clark was briefly reunited with Edwyn Collins in 2013 with the release of his Feel Something ep on Collin’s AED label. Among others, Clark was joined by bassist/Feel Something producer Eric McCann (New Amsterdams), Isobel Campbell and fellow singer/songwriter Brandi Emma. Charlie Clark’s first expat release not only emphasized his unique ability to blend the dark humor of Scotland with the sunny disposition of California, but solidified the easy chemistry of Clark and Emma.
Clark and new writing partner Brandi Emma went on to form Broken Arrow in 2014, the duo soon enlisted friends Eric McCann (bass), Tommy Schoebel (drums) and Snow Patrol’s, Paul Wilson. With Clark’s old pal Wilson on board to play guitar and produce, Wilson soon became an integral part of Broken Arrow, helping to define Clark and Emma’s musical vision. Performing live only a handful of times, Broken Arrow has given audiences an occasional glimpse into their world of dark, lush, and heavily atmospheric soundscapes, creating a much anticipated debut release.
With an infectious taste for the absurd, Clark started side project Charlie Clark and the Majestic 12 in 2015, again working with bassist/producer Eric McCann and drummer Dash Hutton (HAIM), the trio released a feedback laden homage to dream pop on acid with, MJ12’s single, The Devil’s Pulpit, out on Manimal Vinyl.
Just over a decade after Astrid’s last release, Charlie Clark & Willie Campbell are returning to form and have recorded their fourth studio album in Los Angeles. A 2017 release date is planned with a short 2016 Summer tour of select cities and UK festival perfomances.
In 2016 Clark founded Los Angeles based record label Indiscretion Records with wife Michelle Mondragon. Indiscretion is an imprint through The Manimal Group.
Charlie Clark is continuing his ongoing collaboration with Los Angeles based, Austrian artist, Sugarplum Fairies with a promise of more LA-centric projects on the horizon.
