It’s a Tuesday night, (10/1) and I’m winding down after an insanely busy couple of weeks of rehearsals, shows and promotion for ‘Feel Something‘ and I have to say there’s always that weird sense of “what now?” when I come to the end of a promo run. It’s been such a great experience though and it was made even more enjoyable by my band members including new member Matt Van Winkle and the much welcomed return of Brandi Emma after her European adventure.
Eric McCann and I performed at The Bootleg Theater on 9/21 as a duo which was a show that very nearly didn’t happen. We were led to believe that the show had been cancelled as the headliner, Juliette Commagere, was unable to perform that evening so I spread the word via social media that it was off, I then get a call at 8.30am the day of the show telling me it’s on.
Long story short, I was not looking forward to it at all but it turned out perfect in the end. There was a really nice, attentive audience and all the bands we played with, including Ian Ball’s (Gomez) new project, were fantastic so Eric and I had a blast. We always do.
The following day Eric and I took to the stage again, this time at a barbeque in a very nice backyard in Silverlake. The event was for my friend Kevin McGarry who is leaving LA to go to school in London. Kevin is a very talented musician who I met through my night at Taix and has just recorded an album with my longtime collaborator and dear friend Yohei Shikano. Best of luck Kevin!
On 9/25 the gang gathered at Moss and Ginger in Pasadena which is a beautiful vintage clothes shop run by my drummer Joel Patterson and his wife Kim. The gathering was to pre-record a performance and interview for the SoCal Beat show on Time Warner Cable which will be aired in the next few weeks so I’ll let you all know as soon as I get the details of when it’s on!
We performed ‘Don’t Let Me Down‘ and Brandi and I spoke nonsense for a bit. I have to say Joel’s shop looked amazing and it was hard not to buy some of the many nice items whilst we were there. A big thank you to Julia Garcia for making the whole thing come together.
After many nights of rehearsal in very different formations we finally put all 5 pieces together last Friday at the Buzz Bands LA 5th Anniversary Bash at The Satellite in Silverlake. This was the first time I’d played this venue since I came here on tour in 2008 with my old band.
Kevin Bronson and Seraphina Lotkhamnga at Buzz Bands LA have been so supportive to me on this record and organize great events anyway so I didn’t think twice about doing this show when asked to do so. The line up was great and included Dream Boys, who are fronted by another fellow Scot, Army Navy and Beat Club. Marion Hodges from KCRW was spinning between bands also.
In the meantime I’m continuing to write songs for the new record and I’m also writing for some other new projects which I’m excited about whilst the ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ video is being completed. The next run of promotional work is getting put together for the end of the month so stay tuned for more details.
